Framlingham Castle, a great day out
The area around Thorington is glorious east Suffolk countryside criss-crossed by public footpaths and with nature reserves, wildlife-rich marshes, rivers, commons and heathlands to explore. The local lanes are a delight for cyclists.
Suffolk enjoys a rich church heritage with beautifully-kept village churches often with notable features and well worth a visit. Nearby there's Thorington St.Peter (round tower), Bramfield St.Andrew (a thatched church with unique detached round tower), Wenhaston St.Peter (medieval doom painting) and Blythburgh Holy Trinity (just go there!). Concerts and other events are often held in these churches.
Within ten miles is the Suffolk Heritage Coast. Southwold is a delightful unspoilt, but busy, seaside resort with a its beach, pier, working lighthouse and jaunty beach huts. Walberswick and Dunwich are seaside villages where ancient ruins tell of more prosperous times. The National Trust own heathland at Dunwich cliffs where you can watch for porpoises and seals from the lookout. Take your binoculars to visit the RSPB Minsmere Reserve, less than a twenty minute drive away.
Further afield the impressive Framlingham Castle is a pleasant drive away and often hosts events of interest. While in that area perhaps visit the restored windmill at Saxstead too (both in the care of English Heritage). If travelling the A1120 you can pause at Peasenhall and freely see inside the medieval New Inn building (Landmark Trust). For those mechanically minded there is the Long Shop Museum at Leiston to explore.
The market towns of Halesworth and Saxmundham offer independent shops in historic settings. The Cut at Halesworth (a converted maltings) is the venue for year-round theatre, cinema, arts festivals and concerts. Henham Park, just north of Blythburgh, hosts the renowned Latitude Festival, Grand Steam Rally and other annual events.
Wherever you spend your day your spacious and comfortable Cowshed accommodation will welcome you back to refresh and relax.
